Aggregate Size
Crushed concrete aggregate must be processed to achieve appropriate particle sizes. The method used to crush the concrete—whether mechanical or manual—plays an important role in determining the strength of new concrete, particularly when producing coarse aggregate. Studies indicate that coarse aggregates meeting required standards can be successfully produced. However, recycled fine aggregates tend to be larger and more angular than those typically used in conventional concrete production. As a result, concrete made with crushed concrete aggregate may be harsh and less workable. This issue can be mitigated by incorporating a portion of natural sand into the mix.
