RCA MaterialsWhat Are RCA Materials?

Concrete recycling has become an increasingly common method of utilizing the rubble from demolished or renovated concrete structures. The concrete aggregate is collected from various demolition sites and then put through a crushing machine. This is the process that creates the RCA materials we sell. In this mix, you may find construction gravel, crushed stone, sand, other types of debris. So when you use recycled concrete aggregate, you’ll be getting a simple mix that can help with many different construction projects.

5 Recycling Benefits

The recycling process that creates RCA materials offers many wonderful benefits that make it a better option than simply disposing of it at landfills. That was routinely what happened before these benefits emerged and this process became mainstream. Here are some of the most important benefits of this recycling process.

  1. Conservation of natural resources by reducing the need for gravel mining, water, coal. oil and gas.
  2. Keeping concrete debris out of landfills, which then saves landfill space.
  3. When used as the base material for roadways, there is a reduction in the pollution involved in trucking material.
  4. Raw materials cost is lowered.
  5. Recycling one ton of cement potentially saves 1,360 gallons of water.

What kinds of Concrete can be Recycled into RCA?

Concrete from many different applications such as old concrete structures, sidewalks, building slabs, foundations, curbs, and more can be recycled into RCA.

How is Concrete Recycled?

The first step to recycling old concrete is to use industrial crushing equipment in order to break up the original structure. Next, the broken up concrete is run through a secondary impactor. After being crushed to an even smaller size, the crushed concrete is then screened so that dirt and other foreign objects can be removed. After this step, the concrete is separated out by size.

Another method for recycling concrete is pulverization. Pulverizing the concrete isn’t the best way to recycle concrete, however. It can make the separation of contaminants much more difficult, lowering the quality of the finished RCA.

Repurposing Recycled Concrete Aggregate

When concrete is recycled, it is processed into a range of sizes, each suited to specific uses, which makes the material highly versatile.

Larger pieces of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) are often used to create riprap, which are also known as shot rock, rock armor, or rubble. These large concrete slabs are placed along shorelines to reduce erosion or to build breakwaters. Smaller RCA gravel is commonly used as a cost-effective, environmentally friendly subbase for roads, while finely processed aggregate can even be reused to produce new concrete.
